Annual event celebrates faculty who are making news for OHIO

In keeping with its mission and vision to elevate Ohio University and showcase its excellence, University Communications and Marketing (UCM) partners with faculty members and researchers throughout the University who are committed to sharing OHIO’s stories by engaging with media throughout the country and around the world.

At UCM, those individuals have earned the title of “OHIO Faculty Newsmakers” and are celebrated for their fundamental contributions to the University’s communications and marketing efforts and for helping to raise Ohio University’s national and global profile. UCM recently launched a new OHIO Faculty Newsmakers webpage dedicated to these individuals and the valuable service they provide to the University.

OHIO’s faculty newsmakers serve as expert sources for media outlets, offering professional opinions on breaking news, providing information on complicated subject matters, and educating readers, viewers and listeners on topics that shape our cultural dialogue and form our collective history. In doing so, these individuals are making news for all of OHIO, drawing attention to the expertise of our faculty, to our stellar research efforts, and to the innovative ways Ohio University educates and engages its students.

Defined as employees who, regardless of their title or classification, teach at Ohio University and have been included in media placement reports provided by Cision, OHIO faculty newsmakers included tenured and non-tenured faculty, as well as administrators who serve as educators in the University’s classrooms. Many of OHIO’s faculty newsmakers participate in UCM’s Experts Directory, a searchable database that allows members of the media to find and connect with the numerous newsmakers considered outstanding leaders and top experts in their fields.

Over the past three years, UCM has developed, launched and fine-tuned an event designed to celebrate the above-and-beyond work OHIO faculty newsmakers do in promoting the University and its excellence. The Ohio University Faculty Newsmakers Gala debuted in the fall of 2015.

Hosted by UCM in partnership with the Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost, the annual Faculty Newsmakers Gala recognizes OHIO faculty newsmakers who made headlines during the previous calendar year. The event serves as a means of honoring all of OHIO’s faculty newsmakers and a forum to bestow special recognition on a select few newsmakers – those who earned the 10 most media placements in the previous calendar year and those who were quoted in media reports related to the Associated Press’ top 10 stories of the previous calendar year. Those individuals are presented custom-made Keystroke Catalyst Awards, underscoring the wide-ranging impact a single person can have on enriching others across the region or around the world.

During the Faculty Newsmakers Gala’s first two years, more than 170 OHIO faculty newsmakers were honored for being featured in more than 5,000 media reports – with 38 faculty newsmakers receiving special recognition. UCM will be announcing the date for this year’s gala in the coming weeks.
