Campus communicators, marketers celebrated during CCN Expo

Ohio University’s marketing and communications specialists learned a bit more about their future operating system and celebrated the accomplishments of their peers during the 2017 Campus Communicators Network Expo on May 10.

More than 80 members of the network gathered at Walter Hall for the expo, which featured a presentation from the Office of Information Technology about the upcoming Drupal content management system, which will be rolled out over the next few years across the University’s campuses. Another presentation on the future rebranding of Compass Points then preceded the presentation of the Ohio University Communication Awards.

Mackenzie O’Dwyer (College of Business) earned the Campus Communicator Network Peer Award for her efforts to keep her department running after the departure of two colleagues.

“When Mackenzie's supervisor left the University for another opportunity and her other team member left her position to pursue grad school, Mackenzie easily could have shut down or declared defeat,” her nomination read. “…Instead, she gracefully stepped up and managed the workload of three positions before helping to hire and train her team member's successor. She didn't just keep the minimum work moving forward, but she proposed new ideas and efficiencies that made our relationship and output better.”

The team of Justin Dean, Linda Weiss and Mark Brunton (Auxiliaries) took home the Excellence in Marketing and Branding/Campaign award for the Jefferson Marketplace campaign. The Marketplace opened in January 2017 and the team contributed “to all aspects of branding, graphic design, interior design, sign creation, marketing and communications,” the nomination read. While past renovations have used outside firms to handle branding, the Auxiliaries Marketing team led the charge, from naming concepts within the venue and developing visual identities of all venue concepts to designing, manufacturing and coordinating installation of venue signage.

“What is most amazing is that all of the above was accomplished while still maintaining all other marketing and communication duties for Culinary Services, and the Auxiliaries at a high level,” the nomination concluded.

The Excellence in Marketing and Branding/Event award went to Jennifer Bowie and Ellen Gray (Advancement) for their coordination of the 2016 Black Alumni Reunion. More than 1,000 alumni and friends registered to attend one or more of the 32 events that took place” during the three-day reunion weekend, the nomination noted. The total guest count was the highest on record. The plan included email, print, social, web, target ads, video, photography, scriptwriting, news briefs and more.

Excellence in Internal Communication awards were also presented in three categories for the top natively-hosted Compass stories in 2016, based on readership, by CCN members outside of University Communications and Marketing. The News award went to Megan Vogel (Student Affairs) for the article “Candidates for Vice President for Student Affairs to visit Athens Campus, published Feb. 22, 2016. Hailee Tavoian (Advancement) won the Feature award for “Journeys converge for Homecoming 2016,” published Oct. 10, 2016. And E.J. Schodzinski (Eastern Campus) won the Regional award for “Ohio University’s Eastern Campus honors 2016 graduating class,” published April 30, 2016.

Besides the awards and presentation, a series of vendors set up tables to share their efforts on campus. The vendors were Instructional Innovation, WellWorks, the GRID Lab, the Calendar of University Events, and University Communications and Marketing.
