On The Green Weekend festivals tap food and film nostalgia

Are you longing to relive the days of your youth, seeing beloved classic films light up the silver screen once again? Perhaps you have been craving another bite of your favorite Athens food?

You can satisfy your eyes and taste buds with the ultimate nostalgia thanks to two On The Green Weekend festivals. This year’s On The Green Weekend will feature its annual Film Festival May 18-20, and its first Food Truck Festival May 20.

Film Festival

The “through the decades” Film Festival will take place at the historic Athena Cinema. Broken into three decades, the festival will showcase movies from 1967, 1977 and 1987.

“Since we’re in 2017, we went back through the decades and took the top films of those years,” said Ali Wills, assistant director for strategic partnerships with the OHIO Alumni Association. “You can see any film you want — when you want to — these days, but seeing it in a theater takes on a whole different experience.”

The 1967 Film Fest will begin on Thursday, May 18, and will feature screenings of “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner” at 5 p.m., followed by the landmark crime flick “Bonnie and Clyde” at 7 p.m.

More unforgettable films will be shown on Friday, May 19, with the 1977 Film Fest: the romantic comedy “The Goodbye Girl” at 5 p.m., followed by “The Spy Who Loved Me” at 7 p.m., a James Bond classic.

Rounding out the weekend with some gasps and laughs, on May 20 the 1987 Film Fest will feature two of the year’s most prized films, beginning at 5 p.m. with “Fatal Attraction,” and closing with the comedic “Good Morning, Vietnam” at 7 p.m.

“The Film Fest is a nice break from the interaction of other activities because you get to sit back and enjoy the films, while still having a shared experience,” Wills said.

Food Truck Festival

Athens’ best food trucks will invade Pepsi Tailgreat Park for the inaugural Food Truck Festival from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday, May 20. Alumni will have the chance to revisit the flavors of their favorite Athens foods, while discovering a selection of new, local cuisine.

“When alumni come back to Athens, they always want to try their classic favorite foods as well as try new cuisines in Athens,” said Katrina Heilmeier, associate director of campus relations. “We thought incorporating a food truck festival would allow alumni to enjoy many of Athens’ favorite cuisines during one event.”

The Food Truck Festival will feature the iconic Burrito Buggy and Mister Softee ice cream truck from Larry’s Dawg House. Newer — but just as tasty — food trucks include OMG! Rotisserie and Atheenie Weenie.

“We love being able to showcase the community of Athens any chance we can during On The Green Weekend,” Heilmeier said.
