Summer construction projects to affect traffic, parking on Athens Campus

Several construction projects on the Athens Campus are slated to begin Monday, May 1, after Commencement ceremonies and Move Out activities have made way for the quieter summer months.

While most construction is planned to minimize the disruption to surrounding events and activities, extended roadway and lane closures and traffic and pedestrian pattern changes may be necessary for some projects. Summer construction is currently scheduled to be complete on August 15 for projects whenever possible.

See below for a list of summer construction projects currently planned for the Athens Campus, as well as any anticipated traffic and pedestrian detours or other potential disruptions to normal operations.

South Green Drive culvert replacement
As reported previously in Compass, work is scheduled to begin Wednesday, May 3, to replace the failed culvert under South Green Drive with a new concrete culvert designed to improve the performance and longevity of this system.

Beginning May 3, the lanes will shift slightly to the south until June 23, then to the north through August 18. After August 18, the contractor will begin restoring the original configuration of the road while work continues in this area through mid-September. While vehicle traffic will be maintained along the roadway during the project, pedestrian traffic will be rerouted to the north around the construction site. Please use caution while transiting the area.

College Green improvements
Work on College Green over the summer will include exterior work on McGuffey Hall, repair to the retaining wall at Cutler Hall, a high voltage electrical upgrade to Cutler Hall and repair to the brick walkway between McGuffey and Wilson Halls.

Charles J. Ping Recreation Center
From May 1 through June 9, repair work to the facility’s chiller will result in a parking lot closure from the roundabout to the loading dock. Patrons will be asked to enter and exit the parking lot through the entrance across from the Living Learning Center. Temporary handicap parking spaces will be added during this time.

During the annual steam outage from May 8-19, Ping will not have air conditioning or hot water, though access to cold water, drinking fountains and restroom facilities will be maintained.

In addition, construction throughout the summer will intermittently close off various spaces within Ping, including the office area, meeting rooms, Area E, first floor men’s and women’s restrooms and locker rooms and the equipment desk. While the locker rooms will be sporadically available, restroom access will be maintained throughout this project. Second floor electrical work, for which the schedule is to be determined, will result in cardio room equipment being placed in the hallways and in the Combative Arts Room.

Sook Academic Center
Construction on the Sook Academic Center, located directly in front of Peden Stadium facing South Green Drive, will begin in August and conclude a year later, in August 2018.

Seigfred Hall
Repair work to the windows and masonry of Seigfred Hall will begin in June and conclude in August.

Back South demolition
Beginning in May, demolition work on Fenzel, O’Bleness and Martzolff residence halls on South Green may impact traffic along the truck routes behind Nelson Drive. Drivers and pedestrians should use caution in this area.

Asphalt parking lot repair
Several on-campus parking lots, including 44 (near McCracken Hall), 55 (near the recreation fields on South Green Drive), 90 (Morton Hall), 133 (Walter Fieldhouse), 201 (The Ridges), 40 and 41 (Seigfred Hall and Sculpture Studio) and 109 (Life Science Research Facility), are scheduled for asphalt cut/patch, seal coat and crack fill work. Transportation and Parking services will release a comprehensive schedule of summer parking lot repair work in May.

Additional information regarding lot closures can be found on the Special Events and Lot Clearings and Construction Updates pages on the Transportation and Parking Services website.

Stimson Avenue roundabout work
The City of Athens will begin work May 1 on a roundabout to be installed on Stimson Avenue near the Sonic Drive-In. As a result, Stimson Avenue from McKinley Avenue to Rock Riffle Road (including the section that crosses the Hocking River) will be closed from May 1 through mid-July. This closure will affect some access to campus from US 50/32 and US 33 to the Stimson Road exit.

Sidewalk closures on campus
Several sidewalks on campus will be closed for repair throughout the summer. They include:

  • The sidewalk adjacent to Lincoln Hall at the intersection of East Union Street and East Green Drive will be closed from May 22 through July 31 for utility repair work; pedestrians should follow posted detour signs.
  • The sidewalk on the North McKinley Avenue side of the Front Four will be closed the week of May 29 to June 2. Signage will indicate sidewalk portions that will be temporarily closed.
