Learn more about Spring Commencement 2017

Ohio University is preparing for the graduate and undergraduate commencement ceremonies that will take place at the end of the semester.

When is Spring Commencement?

Ohio University will hold three ceremonies between Friday, April 28 and Saturday, April 29.

Graduate Commencement Ceremony

  • Friday, April 28, 2017, at 9:30 a.m.
  • Doors will open to the public at approximately 8:00 a.m.

Undergraduate AM Commencement Ceremony

  • Saturday, April 29, 2017, at 9:30 a.m.
  • Doors will open to the public at approximately 8:00 a.m.

During the AM ceremony, undergraduate degrees will be conferred for the following colleges:

  • Scripps College of Communication
  • Fritz J. and Dolores H. Russ College of Engineering and Technology
  • College of Fine Arts
  • University College
  • Regional Higher Education
  • College of Business

Undergraduate PM Commencement Ceremony

  • Saturday, April 29, 2017, 2:00 p.m.
  • Doors will open to the public at approximately 12:30 p.m.

During the PM ceremony, undergraduate degrees will be conferred for the following colleges:

  • Honors Tutorial College
  • Center for International Studies
  • College of Health Sciences and Professions
  • Gladys W. and David H. Patton College of Education
  • College of Arts and Sciences

How do I know if I’m eligible to participate?
Students who have met graduation requirements during the 2016 Fall or 2017 Spring semesters are welcome to participate in Spring Commencement 2017.

This includes students earning doctoral, professional doctoral, masters, associates or undergraduate degrees through any of Ohio University’s degree programs on all campuses or through e-Learning programs.

How do I order my cap and gown?
Students who applied for spring graduation were instructed to order their cap and gown during the application process. Additional information regarding cap and gown orders can be found at www.ohio.edu/commencement/regalia.cfm

When/where can I pick up my cap and gown?
Cap and gown packages can be picked up at the Amanda J. Cunningham Leadership Center (Rm. 366, 3rd floor of Baker University Center) during the following times:

  • Monday, April 24, 2017: 3-7 p.m.
  • Tuesday, April 25, 2017: 3-7 p.m. 
  • Wednesday, April 26, 2017: 3-7 p.m.
  • Thursday, April 27, 2017: 3-7 p.m.
  • Friday, April 28, 2017: 7-10 a.m. and 3-7 p.m.
  • Saturday, April 29, 2017: 7 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Note: Full packages and individual pieces may also be purchased during these times.

Who are the Spring Commencement speakers?
Dr. Risa Whitson will be the speaker for the Graduate Commencement Ceremony on Friday, April 28. Dr. Whitson is an associate professor in the Department of Geography and the Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Program. She has been teaching at Ohio University since 2004. She is also an active affiliated faculty member of the Latin American Studies, International Development Studies, and Communication and Development Studies programs in the Center for International Studies.

Ohio University announced that alumnus Wesley Lowery, correspondent for The Washington Post, will speak at the morning and afternoon Undergraduate Commencement ceremonies on Saturday, April 29. Lowery, a two-time Pulitzer Prize winner, attended Ohio University's E.W. Scripps School of Journalism from 2008 to 2012, and served as the editor-in-chief of The Post, the campus' independent student newspaper. View the announcement for more information about Lowery

Will my college have a reception after the ceremony?
College reception locations and times can be found on OHIO’s official Commencement website

 I’m a faculty member interested in participating in Spring Commencement. What do I need to know?
Faculty are asked to arrive in the Convocation Center no later than 45 minutes prior to the start of each ceremony. Signs will be placed throughout the lower concourse area indicating each college’s location.

Faculty may rent regalia online. All rental packages will include the necessary regalia to participate in the Commencement ceremonies.
