AAUW officer discusses going forward with President Trump in office

Lisa Maatz, a government relations executive of the American Association of University Women in Washington D.C., came to Ohio University on Jan. 24 to discuss how women should move forward after the historic Women’s March following the inauguration of President Donald Trump.

“I’ve never seen D.C. taken over the way it was on Saturday. Never,” said Maatz.

AAUW is a national grassroots organization that works to improve the lives of millions of women and their families. It is a nonpartisan organization, yet many members decided to attend the march based on their values.

“For us, it’s not about whom the party has in power, it’s about good policy. It’s about making sure from an advocacy standpoint that we’re doing the very best we can for working class families,” Maatz said.

She went on to discuss a couple of legislative orders that Trump’s administration has signed into effect during his first few days, such as the Global Gag Rule and a new mortgage premium plan that would make first-time home buyers pay a lot more on their mortgages.

Maatz and the Athens County AAUW members also discussed ways to improve engagement with the community, such as inviting local government representatives to events and helping out more with the student chapter of AAUW.
