Office for Diversity and Inclusion creates Multicultural Faculty in Residence Program

In order to attract diverse faculty members to the Athens Campus, the Ohio University Office for Diversity and Inclusion, in partnership with the Office of Housing and Residence Life, has created the Multicultural Faculty in Residence Program.

Beginning Fall Semester 2017, the program will provide the chosen candidate with a furnished apartment in a residence hall, meal stipend, campus parking pass and a mentor.

Vice Provost for Diversity and Inclusion Dr. Shari Clarke said letters have already been sent to every college’s leadership to encourage them to nominate their diverse faculty members.

"This is a great incentive program that was designed to increase diversity in the residence halls," Dr. Clarke said. "This person won't have to worry about finding a place to live, so they can focus on their academic writing and teaching. Their assigned mentor can help them acclimate to campus and broader community."

The chosen candidate is expected to: work at least 45 hours a semester; establish goals and an action plan for the academic year; design and organize at least one multicultural program for building residents each semester; meet with the residential director or graduate residential director and attend an in-hall staff meeting each month; complete an annual review and meet with Dr. Clarke or her special assistant Dr. Alicia Chavira-Prado each semester.

"This program will provide a seamless transition between the classroom and the residence hall environment and increase the presence of diverse faculty in the residence halls," Clarke said. "I've wanted to implement this program since my arrival to Ohio University three years ago, so I'm excited that it is coming to fruition."

To apply for the program, candidates must be recommended to Diversity and Inclusion by their college dean or a designate.

Clarke said the plan is to interview candidates in February and March and select the successful candidate in April with a residence hall move in date in August.
