A message from OUPD Chief Andrew Powers

On Wednesday, Nov. 18, Ohio University Police Chief Andrew Powers sent the following message to the OHIO community.

Dear University Community,

I’m writing to share with you that a suspicious note mentioning a violent act, dated today (11/18/15), was found in a public restroom on the Athens Campus. The note did not specify a location or individual or group of people. Police are investigating the origins of the note and believe there is very low risk to the campus at this time.
Although the note contained no specific threat against Ohio University, I ask that Ohio University employees and students be attentive to their work spaces and observant of their surroundings. If you see something suspicious, please contact OUPD at 740-593-1911.
Ohio University is an open and welcoming community. We pride ourselves on fostering a safe, inclusive environment that comprises people from many nationalities and backgrounds.
As world events progress, security surrounding events on campus will likely be heightened in the interest of public and campus safety. For example, if you attended last night’s football game, you may have noticed increased police presence and additional safety measures.

Again, I consider the threat associated with this note to be low and am sharing this information, in an abundance of caution, to raise awareness.
