Global events spark gratitude for the Bobcat family

During troubled times, a close-knit academic community can be a source of strength and unity

Ohio University President Roderick J. McDavis sent the following message to the OHIO community on Friday, Nov. 20.

Dear University Community,

We live in complex times. Unfortunately, racial tensions continue to plague our nation, and violent acts of terrorism around the world threaten our feelings of personal security. During times like these, it is easy to feel vulnerable, isolated and distrusting of the world in which we live. It is during times like these that the Bobcat family shines brightest.

We are privileged to live in a caring and close-knit community that values individuality and diversity. As Bobcats, we respect one another. We look out for one another. We embrace inclusivity because we know that our differences make us stronger. And, when national and world events threaten to divide us, we lean on one another and learn from one another. Our shared values are a source of unity and security.

Next week, many of us will gather with loved ones for Thanksgiving. My personal reflections will most certainly include appreciation and gratitude for our Ohio University family. We are blessed to be part of such a safe, welcoming and open-minded community, and we must all strive to safeguard the Bobcat experience by promoting the values that have sustained our academic home throughout the centuries.

With Much Respect and Gratitude,

Roderick J. McDavis
