Southern Campus’ Electronic Media to broadcast World Slalom Skateboarding Championship

Ohio University Southern Electronic Media will televise the World Championships of Slalom Skateboarding, sanctioned by the International Slalom Skateboarding Association (ISSA). The broadcast will cover Cone Fest – a competition that brings the world’s best racers to Ashland, Kentucky, for the three-day event.

“We are excited about the chance to provide such a unique learning opportunity,” Don Moore, associate professor and director of the Southern Campus’ electronic media program, explains. “We are always looking for new ways to provide our students with real-world skills; applying the theory explained in the classroom.” Moore continued, “We‘ve produced football, basketball and professional hockey but never anything like this. Students are excited; they can bring more of an X-Game flare to this type of sporting event.”

President of Poage Landing Days Philip Stewart, who has an extensive background in television, believes that the collaboration will be a winning combination for the tri-state region that will, “showcase our area, and the outstanding job OUS Electronic Media does for our community.” Stewart added, “We are excited to have [the event] broadcast locally and streamed live internationally.”

“It’s a tremendous opportunity for students to participate in a sporting event that is out of the mainstream,” said Brian Corea, associate lecturer of electronic media. “Providing audio for a non-traditional event like this adds to the challenge for our electronic media students. We will cover the event with four or five camera people, a slow-motion operator, graphics personnel, audio technicians and reporters,” explained Corea. “Generally it takes a crew of about 15 team members.”
