Ohio Farmer’s Market set to debut Sept. 11 at a new location

An opportunity for members of the Ohio University community to engage with the local community begins this Friday with the debut of this year’s Ohio Farmer’s Market.

The first Ohio Farmer’s Market of the semester will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 11, in Oasis Park, located at the top of Morton Hill on the Athens Campus. Open to all students, faculty, staff and members of the community, the Ohio Farmer’s Market will feature local food and craft vendors while providing a variety of volunteer opportunities for those who attend.

A smaller version of the popular Athens Farmer’s Market, the Ohio Farmer’s Market will feature six to eight vendors selling a variety of locally-grown fruits and vegetables, freshly baked goods and handmade crafts. Local businesses that include Crumbs Bakery, Sarah’s Sweets and ReUse Industries are expected to participate.

In years past, the market has been held at the former Howard Hall site, located at Union and College Streets. In relocating the market to Oasis Park, organizers are hoping to attract more underclassmen living in residence halls on East, South and West Greens.

According to Barbara Harrison, assistant director for community engagement in OHIO’s Division of Student Affairs, the market “gives students the opportunity to try local, fresh foods that they may not have tried before.” Harrison said she hopes the market’s new and more accessible location will do just that.

Started by OHIO’s Graduate Student Senate in 2007, sponsorship of the Ohio Farmer’s Market was transferred to the Office of Community Engagement within the Division of Student Affairs when leadership within the Senate changed. Harrison believes that the Ohio Farmer’s Market is a good fit for the Office of Community Engagement because it gives Ohio University students the opportunity to learn more about the local community.

In addition to the local produce and other goods, the Ohio Farmer’s Market offers volunteer opportunities for all Ohio University students, faculty and staff, as well as community members. Volunteers are needed to assist vendors, market shoppers, and the University, as well as to promote the market through social media outlets such as Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. For more information on volunteer opportunities and to sign up, contact the Office of Community Engagement at (740) 593-4007 or visit https://www.ohio.edu/involvement/communityservice/

The Ohio Farmer’s Market has four scheduled dates this semester. In addition to the Sept. 11 event, markets will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sept. 25, Oct. 9 and Oct. 23 at Oasis Park.
