Ohio University Fall Commencement 2015: Your Questions Answered


Ohio University will be offering a commencement ceremony at the end of the 2015 Fall Semester; this ceremony will be in addition to the traditional spring ceremony held at the end of each Spring Semester.

When is Fall Commencement?
Fall Commencement will take place on Saturday, December 12, 2015. The ceremony will begin at 2 p.m. in the Convocation Center on Ohio University’s Athens Campus.

Why is this happening?
OHIO’s transition to semesters inevitably altered the way in which students cycle through college. Based on observations over the past several years, and a thorough benchmarking of peer institutions, it was concluded that Ohio University can better accommodate students’ individual needs and respective graduation timelines by offering a Fall Commencement ceremony. Nearly 67 percent of OHIO’s peer institutions already offer this option.

How do I know if I’m eligible to participate?
Students who have met graduation requirements during the 2015 Summer or 2015 Fall semesters are welcome to participate in the Fall Ceremony. This includes students earning doctoral, professional doctoral, masters, associates or undergraduate degrees through any of Ohio University’s degree programs on all campuses or through e-Learning programs.

How do I apply for graduation?
Graduation applications are processed through the Office of the University Registrar’s Graduation Division. Applications for fall graduation will be accepted through September 28, 2015. The Office of the University Registrar can be reached via phone (740.593.4196) or email (graduation@ohio.edu) for additional information regarding the application process.

Do I have to attend Fall Commencement?
Eligible students who apply for fall graduation will have an opportunity to select this commencement ceremony option on the graduation application administered through the Office of the University Registrar. Participation in this ceremony will only be optional this year.

I already applied for graduation in Summer 2015. Can I attend the Fall Commencement?
Absolutely. In fact, students who applied for Summer 2015 graduation will be notified of the fall ceremony and will receive details for participation.

How do I order my cap and gown?
If you are applying for fall graduation, you will be instructed to order your cap & gown during the application process. If you applied for graduation during a different semester, or if you did not order your cap & gown when you filled out the fall graduation application, you can place your order via our secure online ordering system.

When/Where can I pick up my cap and gown?
Cap and gown packages can be picked up at the Amanda J. Cunningham Leadership Center (Rm. 366, 3rd floor of Baker University Center) during the following times:

  • Wednesday, December 9: 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
  • Thursday, December 10: 3:00 p.m.  to 7:00 p.m.
  • Friday, December 11: 1:00 p.m.  to 7:00 p.m.
  • Saturday, December 12: 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.


Note: Full packages and individual pieces may also be purchased during these times.

Who is the Fall Commencement speaker?

Will my college have a reception after the ceremony?
College reception locations and times will be added to OHIO’s official Commencement page later this semester.

I’m a faculty member interested in participating in Fall Commencement. What do I need to know?Faculty are asked to arrive in the Convocation Center no later than 1:15 p.m. on Saturday, December 12. Signs will be placed throughout the lower concourse area indicating each college’s location.

Faculty may rent regalia online. All rental packages will include the necessary regalia to participate in the Commencement ceremonies.
