Campus Dean and Associate Professor of German at Ohio University Zanesville Dr. Jenifer Cushman delivered the luncheon plenary address and served on the Global Experts panel at the BCCIE 2015 Summer Seminar in Whistler, Canada.
The conference focused on equity and responsibility in international education, centering on the theme of “Global Responsibility and Institutional Mandate: Opportunity for Innovation.” Guided by this theme, Cushman’s plenary explored the need to educate non-traditional students on global learning as a twenty-first century imperative. Cushman cited Mary Jean LeTendre, former director of Title I compensatory education for the US Department of Education, who suggested that “Excellence in education need not mean elitism, and equity need not mean mediocrity.” A former Peace Corps volunteer, Cushman commented, “Having grown up in West Virginia and traveled extensively, I know the need for Appalachian students to gain an awareness of their own agency in the world. The regional campus access mission speaks to me.”
Cushman and Ohio University Vice-Provost for Global Affairs Lorna Jean Edmonds are working together to extend the university’s global strategy to the regional campuses. They recently delivered that message at the NAFSA Association of International Educators conference in Boston in May. Cushman is promoting the SUNY COIL (Collaborative Online International Learning) model for regional campuses, which connects faculty and students with international partners in the classroom.
A leader in the field of international education, Cushman currently serves as President of the Association of International Education Administrators (AIEA). Cushman entered the role of Dean of the Zanesville campus in March of 2014, citing a desire to serve under-resourced students. Before coming to Ohio University Zanesville, she served as Dean of International Education at Juniata College in central Pennsylvania and as a professor of German at the University of Minnesota Morris. Cushman was an American Council on Education Fellow (2010-2011) and attended the Harvard Institute for Education Management summer 2014.

Cushman participated in the 2013 Fulbright-Nehru International Education Administrators Seminar to India and contributed to the NAFSA publication "Improving and Assessing Global Learning" and the forthcoming Internationalizing the Undergraduate Psychology Curriculum: Practical Lessons Learned At Home and Abroad. She serves on the OHIO Senior International Management Team and the statewide Ohio Board of Regents working group for postsecondary globalization, formed in response to Governor Kasich’s signing of House Bill 484 in 2014.
