A message from President McDavis regarding Monday's vigil for the Orlando shooting victims.

The following message was sent by President Roderick J. McDavis to the Ohio University community on Monday, June 13, 2016:

Dear Colleagues and Students,

Sunday morning we awoke to a new level of tragedy we had never before experienced. Even though it happened in Orlando, it was a devastation felt throughout the country and here in Athens. I write to you today with an earnest request for solidarity. This is a heartbreaking time for our country and our world.

During a time of reflection following such a senseless act, we have witnessed the basic goodness of humanity emerge. When an urgent call for blood donations was made, lines quickly formed and thousands waited hours to give. When news spread of what had happened, vigils were planned across the country. We too are standing in solidarity with Orlando. Here on campus, our LGBT Center staff has spent much of the day today making rainbow ribbons to be worn at tonight’s vigil on College Green at 6 p.m. They have offered counseling and comfort to anyone who needs it.

One of my favorite Martin Luther King, Jr. quotes is also one of his most well-known: “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” I invite you to come together as you have countless other times, Bobcats. I encourage you to attend tonight’s vigil on College Green. If you are not near campus, you can contact the LGBT Center to learn other ways you can help or participate in an event closer to you.

Let Ohio University show solidarity with the city of Orlando and also our LGBT friends near and far!

Cordially,

Roderick J. McDavis
