OUS Academy of Excellence to focus on Greek culture

Ohio University Southern (OUS) will present “Exploring the World,” the 36th annual Academy of Excellence summer camp July 18-22 at the Proctorville Center and July 25-29 at the Ironton campus.

Hours for the camp are 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. daily.

Assistant Professor of Early Childhood Education Martha Evans, said that this year’s event will focus on the culture of Greece, affirming the influence ancient Greece has had on every aspect of American life today.

“This is the first year I am acting as coordinator for the Academy of Excellence so I want to take a ‘big picture’ approach, establishing a foundation for our students with a study of Greek culture, then expanding to other countries in future years,” added Evans.

The Academy of Excellence should reflect an academic perspective to enlighten young minds and explore dimensions they might not get during the regular school year. Learning about other people helps us to understand, embrace and celebrate our differences.

Students in grades 1-6, will explore a different topic each day. Topics such as literature and drama, foods, architecture, the Olympics, education and philosophy, art and culture will be offered. Various activities will support the themes and students will have the option to choose their activities each day. Children should dress in comfortable attire each day and will be draped with togas over their clothing upon arrival.

Cost for the program is $75 per child. To register, visit one of the following websites:
