“I’m battling hamstring injuries, so hopefully I will be able to run, but I’m not sure I will be able to defend my title, LOL,” Starr said. “Regardless, I will be out there to root the runners on!”

Bobcat Dash 5k to be held during On The Green Weekend

When Larry Starr, BSEd ’68, Med ’71, crossed the finish line after the 2015 Bobcat Dash 5K, he was named the inaugural event’s first champion. The 69-year old Alumni Association board member and former athletic trainer for the Cincinnati Reds can’t wait for On The Green Weekend 2016, and the chance to defend his title.

“I have run over 20 marathons and hundreds of 5ks, 10ks and [half marathons], but this was my first color run,” Starr said. “Being around collegiate and professional sports has always motivated me to remain active. I felt as an athletic trainer I should practice what I preach. I fell in love with the freedom and stress-reliever that running gives me. Running with some fellow board members and alumni made it that much more fun!”

The Bobcat Dash 5K is among the most-anticipated returning OTG events. This springtime run along the Hocking River will begin at Tailgreat Park on Saturday, May 21 at 8 a.m. This year, the Association is skipping the color.

“For last year’s Bobcat Dash, we hosted a color run, which have been very popular across the country for the past few years,” said Tyler Gagai, assistant director of external relations for the Association. “This year, based on feedback that we received from last year’s participants, we are doing a traditional 5K. We are beyond excited for this year’s edition of the Bobcat Dash.”

On The Green Weekend is scheduled for May 18-22, 2016 and events are open to the entire OHIO community.

“[OTG] gives board members an opportunity to meet other alumni, become more directly involved in the Alumni Leaders Conference, and enjoy memories of good old Athens at a beautiful time of year,” Starr said.

Other OTG events include Alumni College courses, local tours, BBQ, Concert Under the Elms, Bobcat Dash 5K, Cruise-In at the Convo classic car show, “OH, I dO” vow renewal ceremony, Film Festival, professional development conference for young OHIO professionals and more.
