Center providing students career development programs all semester

Career and Internship Fair to be held Sept. 23-24

Ohio University students have several opportunities to develop and refine their leadership skills and grow professionally through a variety of workshops and events hosted by the Career and Leadership Development Center.

“We recognize the importance of getting involved in the career and leadership development process early and often during a student’s four years at Ohio University,” said Jodi Pavol, assistant director for outreach at the Career and Leadership Development Center. “Our workshops give students a head start on engaging in this process and allow them to learn from interacting with their peers.”

Foundations, a six-part series for first-year students, is offered on Mondays and Thursdays from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Amanda J. Cunningham Leadership Center in Baker University Center 366. Topics include identifying personal values, networking, career preparation and community service.

The 21st Century Leadership Series is held on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the same location. Participants engage in seven peer-led workshops on subjects including personal branding, team development and emotional intelligence, and earn a leadership certificate at the conclusion of the program. The series is free to all OHIO students and alumni and there is no registration required.

On Sept. 23 and 24, the Career and Leadership Development Center will host one of its largest events of the semester – the Fall Career and Internship Fair. The event provides an opportunity for all current students and alumni to meet with employers from a variety of industries, all gathered in the Baker University Center Ballroom. The fair will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 23, and from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 24. More information on the event, including a list of employers who will be attending, is available at http://www.ohio.edu/careerandleadership/students-alumni/job-search/career-fairs.cfm.

In the week leading up to the fair, the Career and Leadership Development Center encourages students to participate in “Prepare for the Fair” workshops. The workshops will feature tips on interviewing, resume writing and professional etiquette – all designed to help prepare students to engage with prospective employers. The following workshops will be offered:

  • Monday, Sept. 15, from 6 to 8:30 p.m., Baker University Center 503, “You Only Get One Chance to Make a Good Impression”
  • Wednesday, Sept. 17, from 6 to 7 p.m., Baker University Center 503, “Networking 101”
  • Thursday, Sept. 18, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Baker University Center 507, “Mock Interviewing,” registration and professional dress required, http://www.ohio.edu/careerandleadership/students-alumni/job-search/career-fairs.cfm
  • Friday, Sept. 19, from 10 to 11 a.m., Baker University Center 366, “Navigate the Career Fair Maze”

The Career and Leadership Development Center also provides additional resources through its website, including a job search guide and handouts on career fair etiquette and professional dress standards.

Another well-attended event hosted by the center is its Professional Etiquette Dinner, designed to teach students the basics of formal dining in professional settings. This semester’s dinner is planned for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 30, in the Baker University Center Ballroom. Tickets are $9 per person and available at https://commerce.cashnet.com/ohio_careers.

Throughout the year the Career and Leadership Development Center also offers individual career coaching, mock interviews and drop-in advising hours. These resources and services are available to all OHIO students and alumni.
