From staff reports
Ohio University is coordinating with the City of Athens to close Park Place and South Court Street during repair work to a water line that runs beneath the roadway. The closure will mean a change in traffic pattern and the work is expected to take one day.
Both lanes of Park Place and South Court Street will be closed to automobile traffic during the repair work, which is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m., Aug. 26. Pedestrian access to Alden Library and Baker University Center will be maintained.
Traffic will be routed from University Terrace to East Union Street, allowing motorists to connect with College Street and Court Street and access the Uptown area.
Parking meters along South Court Street will be unavailable so as to widen the roadway should emergency response vehicles need to travel the road in the opposite direction to reach areas restricted by the closure.
Absolutely no parking or stopping will be allowed on Park Place or South Court Street during the road closure.
A water outage is not expected, but due to the nature of the work, an emergency shutdown could occur while the repair is being complete.
Following the closure, the south lane of Park Place will reopen to traffic, as well as northbound traffic on South Court Street. The westbound lane of Park Place (closest to Alden Library) will remain closed for repair work to a steam tunnel that is expected to be completed in December.
Other road restrictions that remain in effect during this closure include:
Mulberry Street between Richland Avenue and South Court Street — the roadway is completely closed to pedestrian and vehicular traffic as crews work on tunnel repairs.
