From staff reports
The staff at CATVision are happy to announce that the campus cable television system will be upgraded to a digital high-definition (HD) format during the month of August.
Joshua Bodnar, who has been managing the CATVision system since 2009, notes that "this marks the first significant upgrade to the campus cable system since it was installed during the 1994-95 school year, and we are excited to bring CATVision into the 21st century as we celebrate the 20th anniversary of the system.”
The upgrade grew as a collaborative partnership between Residential Housing and CATVision to enhance the viewing experience for the residential students that represent the bulk of the customers on campus.
Pete Trentacoste, executive director of Residential Housing, said "one of the first questions I received from students when I arrived in 2012 was when they would be able to have HD cable in their residence halls, and I am very excited that we will be able to bring that enhanced service to them in time for fall 2014."
The upgrade will replace most existing analog channels with digital HD versions. Along with improving picture and sound quality, channel locations will change. To pick up the new channel lineup, TVs will need to be reprogrammed after the new system is brought online. We will send additional information out the week before the cutover, and again when it is completed.
After the upgrade, only televisions with a digital QAM tuner will work on the system. Most HD or digital flat-screen televisions sold after 2006 have an integrated digital QAM tuner, but you will want to check your owner's manual to confirm.
If you have an older model television without a QAM tuner (which would include any of the box-style CRT televisions), you will need to either purchase an external set-top box or replace the television.
The staff at CATVision will assist with procuring set top boxes for departmental customers who need them, but the department will be responsible for funding the purchase. If you would like to purchase a set-top box or need additional information, please contact the CATVision staff at email@example.com.
