The following information was posted to the City of Athens website in relation to a project taking place on West Union Street. The project consists of installing a new waterline, completing street improvements, select sidewalk and curb improvements, storm water improvements, and completing an asphalt overlay and pavement markings. It is taking place near several Ohio University administrative buildings. University community members who travel West Union Street are advised of the following information:
On Friday, York Paving will be completing the installation of waterline across West Union Street near Factory Street. The work is expected to begin at 11 p.m. on Friday, July 18 and be completed by 6 a.m. on Saturday, July 19. During this time, West Union Street will be closed between the Factory Street intersection and the Depot Street intersection. Traffic will be detoured using Station Street.
West Union Street will be closed beginning Monday, July 21, at approximately 7 a.m. between the Factory Street intersection and the Depot Street intersection. This detour is expected to be in place until August 21. Local traffic and business traffic will be maintained. Through traffic will be detoured using Station Street.
Parking immediately adjacent to the work zone will also be restricted at times during the project. The north sidewalk is closed between Shafer Street and Smith Street - pedestrians should use the south sidewalk.
The project is being funded using local funds and grants from the Ohio Public Works Commission and the Ohio EPA.
