From staff reports
Ohio University is coordinating with the City of Athens to close one lane of Park Place during repair work to a steam tunnel that runs beneath the roadway. The lane closure will mean a change in traffic patterns. The work is expected to last several months.
The westbound lane of Park Place (closest to Alden Library) will be closed to automobile traffic during the repair work, which is scheduled to begin July 31, 2014 at 7 a.m. Pedestrian access to Alden Library will be maintained. Traffic will be routed from University Terrace to Park Place using the eastbound lane (closest to the president’s residence and Gordy Hall), allowing motorists to connect with the south end of Court Street and access the Uptown area.
The Uptown business area will also be accessible via the East Union Street hill, or Jeff Hill, which allows motorists and pedestrians to connect with College Street and Court Street.
Parking meters along Court Street between Mulberry Street and President Street will be unavailable so as to widen the roadway should emergency response vehicles need to travel the road in the opposite direction to reach areas restricted by the Park Place closure.
Absolutely no parking or stopping will be allowed on Park Place during the road closure.
Other road restrictions taking place during the Park Place closure include:
Mulberry Street between Richland Avenue and South Court Street – the roadway is completely closed to pedestrian and vehicular traffic as crews work on tunnel repairs
University Terrace between East Union Street to Konneker Alumni Center – motorists will be able to access a portion of University Terrace past the Park Place intersection, but will need to turn around near Tupper Hall in order to park at meters located outside Ellis Hall.
College Street – due to the road closure at University Terrace, traffic will right-turn only from College Street onto West Union Street.
Church Street – traffic will be right-turn only from Church Street onto College Street.
