Southern Campus Equestrian Team making its mark

Talk about goin’ west! The Southern campus equestrian team recently returned from the second annual Western Dressage World Championships competition held in Tulsa, Okla.

The riders rented a vehicle to make the 15-hour trek, while the horses and equipment were safely transported in a commercial shipping company semi-truck, thanks to several fundraising events, donations and support from the Ohio University Southern Campus.

The team competed in various categories, including Intro Level Adult Amateur; Basic Level Adult Amateur; and Open Division Basic Level.

According to equestrian team coach Bradie Chapman, competitive horse riding is very beneficial.

“Riders learn how to work with their horse as a partner," Chapman said. "Students also have the opportunity to meet professionals in the industry and ask them questions. The individuals our students come in contact with are not only riders, but also board members of associations, show secretaries, organizers, videographers, photographers and more.”

The Southern campus equestrian team was the only higher education institution that garnered exclusive media attention.

“They did an interview with our team and the coaches. It was shown throughout the show on giant screens in the two main arenas," said equine program director Kelly Hall. "They have asked us to keep them updated with our progress and offered support to make this journey successful."

Initial talks have also begun about the WDAA joining with the Southern campus in an educational partnership.
