OHIO Hockey players, coach to participate in Winter World University Games

Four members of the Ohio University Hockey Team will be traveling to Spain in February to represent the United States and Bobcat Nation at the 2015 Winter World University Games.

USA Hockey announced last week that three players on the Ohio University Hockey Team had been selected for the 22-man roster for the U.S. Men’s National University Team, which will compete in the 2015 Winter World University Games Feb. 4-14 in Granada, Spain. Joining them will be Sean Hogan, head coach of the OHIO Hockey Team, who is returning to the competition as an assistant coach for the U.S. men’s team.

OHIO forwards Joey Breslin, a sophomore from Centerville, Ohio, and Michael Harris, a junior from Silver Spring, Md., and defenseman Tyler Benson, a senior from Lakewood, Ill., will play on the U.S. team, which is comprised of players from collegiate ice hockey teams affiliated with the American Collegiate Hockey Association.

“I am very honored and excited to be able to play against such great competition overseas. It’s going to be an unbelievable experience,” said Breslin. “Throughout these weeks leading up to the tournament, I’m going to dedicate myself to training and getting my conditioning level up, especially since we’ll be playing on an Olympic-sized surface, which is bigger than what we’re used to playing on. It means a lot for me to be selected to play, but our ultimate goal is to win a medal, so we’ve got to be ready and focused.”

Arizona State University leads all U.S. colleges and universities with six representatives on the U.S. Men’s National University Team. OHIO and the University of Oklahoma each will have three players on the U.S. team.

“I think it goes to show the level of collegiate hockey at Ohio University is getting better every year and more and more potential student-athletes are choosing Ohio University to get a great, first-rate college hockey experience,” Hogan said when asked what this accomplishment says about the OHIO Hockey Team as a whole. “I am very proud to be a part of this hockey program.”

This is the second time Hogan has been asked to serve as an assistant coach for the U.S. team. He and former OHIO Hockey defenseman Duncan Green participated in the 2013 Winter World University Games held in Trentino, Italy.

“It is always an honor to be selected to represent your country, and it feels good to be a part of it,” Hogan said. “The last time we went in 2013, we had the best finish for the U.S. National University Team – fourth overall. We are hoping to be able to medal this time around. Having three players selected is a great recognition for the OHIO Hockey program. It is nice that USA Hockey thinks that highly of our organization.”

One of the biggest global winter multi-sports events for student-athletes, the Winter World University Games is an international competition held every two years in different cities. More than 2,500 individuals from more than 50 countries will compete in the event, which is organized by the International University Sports Federation.

“This is a tremendous opportunity and honor for these guys. We’re very excited for them and look forward to following their successes with Team USA,” said Mark Ferguson, executive director of Campus Recreation at Ohio University. “Coach Hogan has quickly built upon the great tradition of OHIO Hockey, and having four representatives on the U.S. National University Team is not only reflective of their individual accomplishments but also the hard work and success of the entire team. They are such a valuable part of the OHIO experience, and Campus Recreation is proud of the work they put in on the ice, in the classroom and in the greater community.”

The U.S. Men’s National University Team will face off in its first bout of the competition on Thursday, Feb. 5, against Japan’s team. The games will be broadcast on the CBS Sports Network.
