Meet the December Classified Employee of the Month

Great job Sharon Romina!

Compass features a Q&A with the non-bargaining Classified Employee of the Month. Each month, Classified Senate selects an employee to acknowledge and recognize as someone who is setting high standards for excellence and innovation. The monthly feature, titled "Great Job," will provide a glimpse into the honoree's life on and off campus.

How surprised were you to win the Employee of the Month award?

I was very surprised and honored to receive the award. I am a member of Classified Senate and recently joined the committee that handles the EOTM nominations. My fellow members had to keep it a secret from me.  

What is your job title and how long have you worked it?

I am the administrative services associate for the Cutler Scholars Program in Trisolini House. I have worked at Ohio University since 2002 starting as a grant administrator in the Scripps College of Communication and have also worked in the Women’s Center and the Patton College of Education.  

What are the most enjoyable things about your job?

The most enjoyable part about my job is working with the Cutler Scholar students. They are wonderful and close-knit group. I love getting to know each student personally and assist them with many different needs. Working with Dr. Butch Hill, Kristine Hoke Daugherty as well as President Emeritus Charles Ping is always a pleasure.  

What is your hometown and where do you live now?

I was born and raised in Youngstown, Ohio, and still have family there. I have lived in other cities in Ohio, including Marietta and suburbs of Cleveland. I moved to Athens in 2002 and live in the city.  

What are your favorite places on campus?

My favorite place on campus is College Green. It is fun to people watch during the warm weather and the fall is such a pretty time of year.

What is the best thing about being a classified employee?

The best thing is being a part of a group of colleagues that you can rely on for help. When I don’t know something I can always call someone who usually has the answer or directs me to the right place.

What is the best thing about your workplace?

The people and students I work with are the best. Having a lovely office in a historical house on campus is another perk.  

What was the last good movie you've seen?

Boyhood was a very good movie. Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb"was funny too.

If you weren’t in your present job, you would be working as an ___ .

I would be an event planner and/or caterer. I have always enjoyed planning events and entertaining and I love to cook for other people.  

Where is your favorite vacation destination?

My favorite place is Panama City Beach, Fla. We have been going there for family vacations for years and it holds lots of memories for us. I love to travel anywhere and will never pass up the opportunity to do so.     

What are your hobbies?

I enjoy reading, trying new recipes and love a good game of Scrabble.  

What is something most people don’t know about you?

I have a thimble collection of more than 350 pieces and have been collecting them since I was 18.

What are your favorite TV shows?

I don’t watch much TV but do enjoy the Parenthood and Nashville series. I watch Food Network when I have spare time.  

Who are your favorite entertainers?

Meryl Streep, Ellen DeGeneres , Bruce Springsteen, Tim McGraw are my favorites.

What is the next big event you can't wait for?

Our Florida family vacation in June. I get to spend time with my daughters and since they live away together time for the three of us is rare.  

What is your dream car/truck/SUV?

A 2016 Kia Soul, which looks like a fun, fuel efficient cute car.

Treat others the way you want to be treated.
