Ohio University mourns the death of first-year student Michael P. Robinson, 18, who died unexpectedly in Atkinson Hall on Saturday, Aug. 31.
A resident of Mentor, Robinson was studying psychology and pre-physical therapy at Ohio University. He was a resident of Foster House.
"On behalf of our University community, I want to express our deepest condolences to Michael's family and friends," Ohio University President Roderick J. McDavis said. "We too are devastated by his death and will work to support his family and friends in any way that we can. Our thoughts and prayers are with them during this very difficult time."
According to Ohio University Dean of Students Jenny Hall-Jones, the Ohio University Police Department and Athens County emergency medical personnel responded to the scene. Based on information gathered by OUPD, there is no reason to believe that there is an ongoing danger to the community.
Student Affairs staff from Residential Housing and Counseling and Psychological Services (CPS) have been on-site in Atkinson Hall and Foster House, providing support to students. Hall-Jones reminded students that they may speak with a counselor any time by calling 740-593-1616. CPS also provides walk-in counseling hours from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday on the third floor of Hudson Hall. For residential students, counselors-in-residence are available in 122 Jefferson Hall (740-593-0769) and can be accessed from 5 to 10 p.m. Sunday through Friday.
"We are asking members of the Bobcat family to support each other during these difficult times," Hall-Jones said.
Funeral services are planned for 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 5, at St. John Vianney Church in Mentor. Brickman Bros. Funeral Home in Willoughby is handling the arrangements.
