Phi Kappa Tau hosts summer reunion in Athens

On July 18, the men of Beta Chapter returned to the rolling hills of southeastern Ohio, home of their alma mater, Ohio University, where they gathered for a summer reunion.

The weekend, hosted by the Beta Chapter Graduate Council, brought together brothers and their families from the 1950s to the present. Nearly 50 alumni were treated to a welcome reception and celebrated memories of days gone by.

The dinner banquet was held Saturday evening in the Cutler Ballroom, followed by an awards ceremony. Speaker Mike "Doc" Reiss spoke about how Phi Kappa Tau was both the first and last fraternity to host a housemother on the Ohio University campus. Beta Chapter was the first fraternity on campus to have a housemother when it was mandated by the university in the Fall of 1938. In 1969, Mary "Mom" Evans arrived and stayed with the boys of Phi Kappa Tau for 15 years, until her retirement in the Spring of 1984.

Another featured speaker was Joel Rudy, Bethany College '60, who retired from Ohio University in 1998 as Vice President and Dean of Students Emeritus, having served the university for 22 years. Rudy also served as the 7th Director of the Phi Kappa Tau National Fraternity, held the position of CEO and currently serves as a member of the Board of Trustees for the National Foundation.

A Sunday brunch meeting concluded the weekend.
