International Student Orientation welcomes students

Event ends with community potluck Aug. 24

Ohio University is officially welcoming its newest class of international students during its International Student Orientation, which is hosted by International Student and Faculty Services.

The annual event runs from Aug. 12 thru Aug. 24 with various events taking place around campus. The orientation is designed to welcome the University's more than 300 new international students on all six campuses.

This is the first year the Baker Center third floor atrium has hosted the new student immigration registration. Most recently, the registration was held in Walter International Education Center or in various conference rooms in Baker University Center, but the size of this year's incoming class forced ISFS to secure a larger venue.

"We're excited to welcome such a large number of graduate and undergraduate international students to campus this year," said Krista McCallum Beatty, director of International Student and Faculty Services. "This year we needed to hold the event in a bigger space to accommodate the number of students we have coming."
While many of this year's events are academic oriented – immigration registration, campus tours and placement tests – others are being held as entertainment or social networking opportunities.
Some of the scheduled fun activities include open mic night, moonlight movie night, beach volleyball, bowling, outdoor games and a Bobcat Bash on Friday, Aug. 23 that consists of games, dancing and prizes.

The 2013 International Student Orientation concludes with the annual International Student Union Welcome Picnic from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 24 at the Richland Avenue Pavilion in The Ridges.

This international food potluck is free and open to the public and community members are welcome to bring their favorite dish to share with other attendees.
