Compass features a Q&A with the non-bargaining Classified Employee of the Month. Each month, Classified Senate selects an employee to acknowledge and recognize as someone who is setting high standards for excellence and innovation. The monthly feature, titled "Great Job," will provide a glimpse into the honoree's life on and off campus
How surprised were you to win the Employee of the Month award?
I was extremely surprised to get the award. They walked into a staff meeting I was in to present it to me and I apparently was the only one who didn't know about it.
What is your job title?
I am an information technology specialist and I have worked at the university since 2001, when I was hired at Shively Dining Hall as a high school student. I started part-time at OIT in 2005 when the desktop computers were being installed in all of the residence halls. I was hired full time several years later.
What are the most enjoyable things about your job?
I would say one of the most enjoyable things about my job is the people. Considering that I sit at a desk where they come to me with their issues. It's never the same thing two days in a row.
What is your hometown?
I was born and raised in Athens. I’ve been other places for periods of time but Athens is where my home and family is.
What was the last good book you read?
"The Things They Carried" and "Soul Patrol." Both are Vietnam War books that show the real human condition in bad situations.
If you weren't in your present job, you would be working as a ______.
Ever since my military tour overseas I think I would enjoy working in aeronautics. I enjoyed the unmanned aerial vehicle programs and flight has a very intriguing nature to it. Who doesn't have a little dream sometimes about going into space?
What things in life are the most important to you?
My family and friends are most important. Without the backing of the people you care about and who care about you, there would be nothing in life that would be so important.
Where is your favorite vacation destination and why?
Myrtle Beach, S.C. The water is warm, the food is amazing, it's not as far of a drive from Athens as other places and the people are nice.
What are your hobbies?
It depends on the time of year. During the summer I ride motorcycles, scuba dive, travel and hike. During the winter I hunt, hike, play video games and go off-roading.
What is something that most people don't know about you?
I am afraid of roller coasters and big crowds. Most people find that kind of weird.
What are your favorite TV shows?
The Big Bang Theory, Family Guy, Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead, Jericho and Bones.
Who are your favorite musicians?
My favorites are Linkin Park, Justin Moore, Eric Church, Craig Morgan, AC/DC, Metallica. I'm not real picky.
What is the next big event you can't wait for?
I want to buy a house and build a big garage and a barn.
Who are your favorite celebrities and why?
I don't really have any favorites. I like when they do good things for regular people. Most of the time I put them on the same level of usefulness as politicians.
Who are the most annoying celebrities to you?
The ones that make tonsof money and do nothing to help people.
What is your dream car?
Someday I would like to own a project car. It can be a Chevy Nova, 1969 Camaro or a newer style car. You can bet it will have at least a 350 small block and carb-fed engine.
What is your favorite saying or quote?
"To be old and wise, you must first be young and stupid."
