Gillian Berchowitz was named director of Ohio University Press effective July 1.
In this role, she will report to Howard Dewald, the associate provost for faculty planning.
Berchowitz has been with Ohio University Press since 1988, most recently in the capacity of editorial director. She entered publishing with Oxford University Press in Johannesburg, South Africa, and then as sales manager for Ravan Press, an antiapartheid scholarly and literary press.
She has served on the Ohio Arts Council Literature Advisory Panel, the Women's Commission at Ohio University. She also has served on the boards of trustees of the Dairy Barn Arts Center in Athens and the Ohioana Library in Columbus, where she cofounded the annual Ohioana Book Festival.
"Gillian has been instrumental in the Press's continued success in publishing superb books that have earned a national and international reputation for excellence among university presses," says David Descutner, University College dean and associate provost for undergraduate studies. "She will be an exemplary leader for the Press."
One of Berchowitz's first appointments was the hiring of Rick Huard as an acquisitions editor effective July 1. He was formerly a project editor at Ohio University Press and more recently a research grant development coordinator for the Ohio University Patton College of Education.
