Safety tips for Halloween 2013

On Oct. 26, an annual Halloween celebration will take over the Uptown area in Athens. The City of Athens will close off Court Street from Saturday, Oct. 26 starting at 2 p.m. until 2:15 a.m on Sunday, Oct. 27. The annual street party includes live music and an opportunity for partygoers to show off their crazy and creative costumes.

Although not a school-sanctioned event, Ohio University recognizes that this is an event in which many students participate. The following information is aimed at keeping everyone as safe as possible.

The Street Party

  • Bands will play from 6 p.m. to 1 a.m. at the following locations: Court & Street and Court & Union.

  • Vendors will be selling food and beverages.

  • Takes place on Court Street. Maps are included on the Athens Halloween Block Party Facebook page.

  • Mill Street will change to one-way traffic Saturday afternoon through Sunday morning.


  • Do not choose a costume that includes anything that could be used as or resembles a weapon.

  • Take into account the weather.

  • Avoid costumes that look like police uniforms.

Staying Safe

  • Celebrate with a group of friends and stay with them; don't wander off alone.

  • Plan a place to meet up if you become separated. Cellular systems can be overwhelmed and cell phones can experience issues.

  • Avoid drinking from open containers that you did not open or drinks you did not mix yourself.

  • Report suspicious activity or unattended bags to OUPD or Athens Police Department.

Important Tips

  • Keep a picture ID with you at all times.

  • Outside of Court Street, stay on sidewalks at all times.

  • It is illegal to urinate publicly.

  • If you or a friend is arrested remain calm and courteous. Do not attempt to leave the scene or argue.

  • If you attempt to intervene in an arrest you may be arrested yourself.

  • You are not required to make a statement and do not have to give consent for them to search your belongings unless required by law.

  • If a friend is arrested, be available to answer their call on an agreed upon number.


Ohio University Residence Halls

  • Students are allowed one guest each. There is a $35 guest fee.

  • Students are reminded that they are responsible for their guests' behavior while on campus. They must accompany guests at all times within the dorms.

Apartments and Houses:

  • Be certain you know all the guests in your house.

  • Secure all valuables.

  • Maintain control of your party and if you need assistance in doing so, contact Athens Police Department.

  • Make sure guests know what to do in case of emergency.


  • No street parking allowed on Mill Street, Oak Street and Kurtz Street.

  • There are no visitor parking allowed on Ohio University property during this weekend. Additional parking information is available on the Parking Services website.

  • Visitors may park at AthensCity Parking Garage on Washington Street or at the Athens County Fairgrounds on W. Union Street ($10/car.) Shuttle provided to Buffalo Wild Wings on Union and Convocation Center Friday 5 p.m. to 3 a.m. and Saturday 3 p.m. to 3 a.m. ($1/each way.)
