Meet the April Classified Employee of the Month

Compass features a Q&A with the non-bargaining Classified Employee of the Month. Each month, Classified Senate selects an employee to acknowledge and recognize as someone who is setting high standards for excellence and innovation. The monthly feature, titled "Great Job," will provide a glimpse into the honoree's life on and off campus

How surprised were you to win the Employee of the Month award?

It's funny, because I found out in a card from one of my office's graduate assistants. Previously, she left Athens for a job and later sent me a card congratulating me on being the April EOM. That's how I found out. She said in the card that she waited to mail the card so she wouldn't "ruin" the surprise. She didn't ruin it though I was very surprised. I work with the kindest, hardest working people and I was flattered that they found me deserving of the nomination.

What is your job title and how long have you worked it and at the university?

I'm the administrative coordinator for the Allen Student Help Center and Bobcat Student Orientation. I've been at the university for 12 years.

What are the most enjoyable things about your job?

The people! Both the staff and the students. I work with wonderful people and everyone really enjoys helping students. In addition to helping them, I also enjoy just talking with them about sports, the weather, their classes, etc.

What is your hometown and where do you live now?

Coolville, Ohio! Ever heard of the Coolspot? That's where Coolville is.

What are your long-term goals in life?

In two years I should graduate with my bachelor's degree in Interactive Multimedia. Then I hope to get a job at the university using my degree. So anyone on campus reading this who needs a creative director – I'm your woman!

What was the last good book you read?

I'm reading two smut series by Karen Marie Moning, "Fever" and "Highlander." They're not really smut, but they're not intellectual either. They're a cross between sci-fi/fantasy/romance.

If you weren't in your present job, you would be working as a ______.

I would be a web designer.

What things in life are the most important to you?

Family and friends are always the most important part of life. Without them there is no one to share the highs and lows.

Where is your favorite vacation destination?

Anywhere on the beach is my favorite, but my husband hates warm weather, so our next vacation will probably be in a cabin in the West Virginia mountains.

What are your hobbies?

I do a lot of homework. For four years, including summers I've spent a lot of time doing homework, so I don't have any hobbies. I do enjoy lounging around the pool in the summer though. I always make time for that.

What are your favorite TV shows?

Monday Mornings – which I just heard is being cancelled. I also like Justified, Elementary, Game of Thrones and Brain Games.

What is your favorite type of music?

Pop/rap. Stop laughing. My coworkers refer to the office as Club Help Center in the summer when we can play music in the office.

What is your next big event?

The 10K in Parkersburg, W.Va., on June 22. It's my first 10K!

Who are the most annoying celebrities?

The Kardashians, Hiltons, Justin Bieber and Taylor Swift. They all really, really annoy me. I'll turn the TV channel and radio station if any of these sights or sounds hit my senses.
