From staff reports
On Wednesday, Ohio University President Roderick J. McDavis and Athens Mayor Paul Wiehl released the following public service announcement regarding the July 3 performance of the Ohio National Guard Artillery at the Under the Elms concert:
Ohio University and The City of Athens announce the 1st Battalion, 134th Field Artillery Regiment of the Ohio National Guard will support the July 3rd Under the Elms concert with a battery of artillery and artillerymen for a performance of Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture. President McDavis and Mayor Wiehl requested this enhancement with the assistance of City Engineer and National Guardsman Andy Stone, who is also a member of the Communiversity Band.
Ohio University, founded in 1804 as the first institution of higher learning in the Northwest Territory, has held the Concert Under the Elms series for over 40 years during summer evenings on its main green. This special presentation will end the evening in a rousing highlight of artillery display combined with scoring for the artillery and bells on the College Green. Attendees should be aware that there will be loud noises at the culmination of the concert, along with a brief restriction for vehicular traffic in the area in order to ensure safety of the general public.
This will be a spectacular evening concert in advance of the fireworks display slated for 10:00 pm that evening and all are encouraged to attend this evening of patriotism.
We continue in our combined efforts to truly make Athens a beautiful place to study, work and live.
President Roderick McDavis
Mayor Paul Wiehl
