President reflects on academic year

On Wednesday, President Roderick J. McDavis sent an email to all faculty, staff and students that reflected on the current academic year

Dear Colleagues and Students,

As the 2012-13 academic year draws to a close, I want to take a moment to reflect upon the collective accomplishments of our University community and to celebrate the opportunities that lie ahead.

Over the course of the past academic year, Ohio University has accomplished much. We successfully completed our semester conversion, achieving curricular cohesion with colleges and universities across the state. We marked the 90th anniversary of journalism education and began renovating Old Baker Center into the Schoonover Center for Communication. We broadened our horizons by starting renovations on buildings that will be used as the home for a new extension campus of the Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine. We bolstered our community through unique leadership in technology commercialization and economic development. But most importantly, we supported our students, providing outreach and access to a high-quality education for students throughout the region, state and nation. Indeed, evidence of the promise of Ohio University is all around us.

This weekend, nearly 5,000 students will become Ohio University alumni in the 2013 graduate and undergraduate commencement ceremonies. I know that the exceptional educational foundations and transformational experiences received at Ohio University will enable our graduates to contribute to a 21st Century society in ways that we cannot begin to fathom. Graduates, we wish you much success and fulfillment as you begin your respective journeys! I have no doubt you will make your alma mater proud!

As our graduates will attest, Ohio University’s transformative power is the direct result of our dedicated faculty and staff, whose passion and expertise are cultivating the leaders of tomorrow. Colleagues, through your excellence in teaching, research and creative activity, you are making a profound impact on the lives of many, and I salute your commitment to ensuring that our students receive a high quality education!

As we continue our commitment to educational excellence, we look forward to welcoming a new group of Ohio University students, faculty and staff in Fall 2013. We will induct Ohio University’s Class of 2017 at the President's Convocation for First-Year Students on Sunday, August 25th. To officially kick off the 2013-14 academic year, we also will hold a Faculty and Staff Convocation in late August, featuring the State of the University Address. I strongly encourage faculty and staff to attend these important university events.

Every member of our academic community plays an important role in making our university great. Thank you very much for all that you have done and will do to advance the promise of Ohio University!
