2013 summer construction projects

Here’s what’s happening on the Ohio University Athens campus this summer:

Oxbow Bridge rehabilitation

  • Project of: City of Athens
  • Timeline: May 6–October 25
  • What’s happening: The bridge will undergo major rehabilitation.
  • Impact: Richland Avenue will be closed from just north of West Green Drive to West Mulberry Street. Oxbow Trail and the access road will be closed from behind West Green to Baker University Center. Richland Avenue and Oxbow Trail will reopen to all traffic on August 21; the access road behind Baker Center will remain closed until the bridge project is completed in late October.
  • Detour: Vehicles will be detoured onto Shafer Street. Pedestrians will be rerouted via West Mulberry, Park Place, University Terrace and the All-Purpose Trail (see map at bottom of page). The crosswalk from West Green to Porter Hall and Grover Center will remain open, as well the steps behind the Research and Technology Building on President Street. For an accessible detour, use Baker University Center.

Multipurpose Pavilion construction

  • Project of: Ohio University
  • Timeline: May 6–January 2014
  • What’s happening: The new indoor practice and recreation facility for athletics and recreation sport sciences will be built between Peden Stadium and the Ping Center.
  • Impact: Lot 133—the small Peden lot—will be closed until January 2014.
  • Detour: None, but watch for construction vehicles entering and exiting the site via South Green Drive. Check #OhioUBuilds on Twitter for the most up-to-date information.

Housing Development Plan Phase I

  • Project of: Ohio University
  • Timeline: May 6, 2013–August 2015
  • What’s happening: The site of the former Wolfe Street Apartments will be prepared for construction of new residence halls that will open in fall 2015.
  • Impact: In addition to carrying construction traffic, South Green Drive and University Terrace will see excavation for installation of utilities for the site. Parking lots 79, 81 and 82 will be eliminated altogether. Spaces in those lots will be replaced on a 1:1 ratio.
  • Detour: None, but watch for construction vehicles on South Green Drive. South Green Drive and University Terrace may be reduced to one lane or closed temporarily as utilities are routed to the site. Watch #OhioUBuilds on Twitter for the most up-to-date information.

Parking Lot Expansions

  • Project of: Ohio University
  • Timeline: May–August
  • What’s happening: Two student overnight parking lots are being expanded to accommodate additional vehicles.
  • Impact: Both lots will be offline temporarily. Lot 50, off North McKinley Avenue behind River Park Towers, will reopen August 20. Lot 55, off South Green Drive by the New Life Assembly of God Church, will reopen July 10.
