From staff reports
Ohio University Campus Red Cross is excited to partner with O’Bleness Health System Race for a Reason this year. OHIO Campus Red Cross is an organization composed of 15 student volunteers who reach out to the community, increase the number of donors and serve as ambassadors for Red Cross. They hold several blood drives on campus every year and inform the student body about the significance of donating and helping with the cause.
The largest charity-based race event in Athens, the O’Bleness Health Systems Race for a Reason will be held April 27. A joint venture between Ohio University Athletes in Action and The Center for Sports Administration, the event allows individuals to raise funds for the charity of their choice.
Campus Red Cross President Leanna Vinson wanted to get involved because Race for a Reason has been very influential in the community. Campus Red Cross was impressed by how much the event has grown and how much money the groups that participate raise each year.
“We hope to get increased awareness of the importance of donating blood and why more people should donate,” Vinson said.
As a Red Cross supporter for seven years, Vinson understands the value of the organization’s mission. “I learned at an early age the importance of donating blood, as only about 4 percent of the world’s population donates blood,” she said. “I have seen and experienced how rewarding the donation process truly is, and saving up to 3 lives is really indescribable.”
