From staff reports
Residential Housing and the Office of Design and Construction will be closing sections of the South Green catwalk system on the Athens campus effective immediately due to structural concerns.
"The safety of our residents remains one of the paramount concerns of our office, and upon receiving preliminary reports that sections of the catwalk have deteriorated faster than anticipated and are now in need of repairs, we have decided that closing them is the appropriate action," said Christine Sheets, executive director of Residential Housing.
The specific sections of the catwalk system that will be closed include:
The catwalks directly adjacent to Cady, Foster and Brough Houses
The catwalks directly adjacent to Dougan and True Houses
The catwalks directly adjacent to Armbruster, Atkinson and Smith Houses
Residential Housing staff will be communicating directly with the students that will be affected by these closures to inform them of how they will be impacted. The closed sections of the catwalk will be barricaded and clearly marked, and the campus community is asked to avoid these areas and adhere to all posted signage.
Work to correct the identified problems will begin immediately, but is estimated to take at least 10 to 12 months to complete.
Sheets added, "We appreciate the patience and understanding of the campus community while this work is being completed."
