Lot closures frequent in spring quarter

Due to the proliferation of events on and around the Ohio University Athens campus this quarter, there will be a higher than usual number of lot closures. Parking Services is urging drivers to pay attention to posted lot closures to avoid the inconvenience of having a vehicle towed.

"There will be signs posted at the entrance to each lot 48 hours prior to the lot being closed," explained Marty Paulins, director of transportation and parking services. "The sign will state the date and time that vehicles need to be removed from the lot or risk being towed. The information is also posted on Parking Services’ website under the announcements section, Compass and in emails that are sent to all students."

The spring lot closures begin this Friday with the arrival of the Impact 2012 event. Parking on central and west campus areas will be difficult because parking lots 127 and 128 will be taken offline on Thursday at 11 p.m. The parking lots are taken offline to accommodate several hundred school buses bringing high school students to the event at the Convocation Center.

"Vehicles parked in lots after the lot has been closed will be ticketed and towed," said Paulins. "If your vehicle has been towed, contact Parking Services or if it is after normal business hours contact the Ohio University Police Department (OUPD)."

There are a number of events coming up before graduation. Some of these events include:

  • Impact 2012

  • Commencement

  • Kids Fest

  • Triathlon

  • Employer Career Fair

  • Wiz Khalifa concert at the Convocation Center

  • Clearing of parking lots in Mill Street and Palmer Street area for OUPD and Athens Police Department for fest weekends

"There are many different organizations that host events during spring," said Paulins. "It is always imperative that event organizers contact Parking Services, especially going into next spring on the Q2S transition."

With so many planned lot closures, it can be confusing for faculty, staff and students to recall which lot will be open when. To abate this, drivers should contact Parking Services with any questions.

"If faculty or staff need to park on the Athens campus overnight we encourage them to contact Parking Services on where to park to avoid being towed," said Paulins. "Please check the Parking Services website in the announcement section for all available updates. Updates are also available on the Parking Services website for parking on large visitor weekends such as Mom's Weekend."
