Compass features a Q&A with the non-bargaining Classified Employee of the Month. Each month, Classified Senate selects an employee to acknowledge and recognize as someone who is setting high standards for excellence and innovation. The monthly feature, titled "Great Job," will provide a glimpse into the honoree's life on and off campus.
How surprised were you to win the Employee of the Month award?
I was very surprised. I had no idea I had been nominated.
What is your job title and how long have you worked here?
My current title is administrative coordinator. I've been with Risk Management & Safety/Environmental Health & Safety since July 2000. I've been an employee at the University since Feb. 26, 1986. I've had jobs in the Bursar's Office, Purchasing, College of Osteopathic Medicine, Alumni Relations and Multicultural Programs.
What are the most enjoyable things about your job?
I enjoy the Risk Management & Safety staff. I have contact with a variety of people (faculty, staff, students, community, etc.), and the fact that no two days are every the same – lots of variety.
What is your hometown and where do you live now?
I'm originally from Nelsonville, Ohio, but currently live east of Athens.
What are your long-term goals in life?
I want to move to Virginia to be closer to my family.
What was the last good book you read?
A book series called "The Wives of King David" by Jill Eileen Smith
If you weren't in your present job, you would be working as a ______. Why?
I would be a librarian because I love reading.
What things in life are the most important to you?
Family is number one. I have two adult sons who have beautiful wives and I have four of the most spectacular granddaughters that walk the earth. We love having fun together.
Where is your favorite vacation destination and why?
I like Hilton Head Island. It has beautiful beaches where you can be as peaceful or busy as you want to be.
What are your hobbies?
I enjoy scrapbooking. I consider myself a family historian. I complete two chronological scrapbooks every year and have been doing so since 2000 in addition to many special themed scrapbooks (i.e., weddings, vacation, etc.). I also like reading.
What is something that most people don't know about you?
I am an ordained minister serving my local church as needed.
What is the next big event you can't wait for?
My vacation in June. I get to spend the whole week with my family
What is your favorite saying or quote?
I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.
