A message of thanks for the service of veterans

On Thursday, Ohio University President Roderick J. McDavis sent an email to the entire OHIO community reflecting on Veterans Day and thanking veterans for their service.

Dear Students, Faculty and Staff,

Tomorrow marks the annual day of commemoration set aside to honor America's veterans for their service. At Ohio University, veterans hold a very special place in our history. Following their service under General Washington in the Revolutionary War, our founders Rufus Putnam and Manasseh Cutler successfully lobbied the Continental Congress for the land purchase that would eventually result in the founding of Ohio University.

Our connection with those who have served continues today. The hundreds of veterans and those in active service who study, teach and work alongside us bring unique perspectives and experience, strengthening the diversity of our university and the greater community.

At Ohio University, we take special pride in welcoming those who have served, and are honored to have been named a Military Friendly School by G.I. Jobs magazine. This annual designation recognizes 20 percent of post-secondary institutions for their commitment to military and veteran students. This distinction recognizes the work we have done to better serve students who are veterans through enhanced services, improved communication, and increased collaboration with off-campus groups. This recognition reflects work of Student Affairs, University College, the Registrar's Office, Enrollment Management, University Libraries and Student Senate, among others.

This weekend, whether you attend formal Veterans Day celebrations or spend time in quiet reflection, I hope you will take some time to honor the contributions and sacrifices of our veterans and those who continue to serve.
