Ohio University President Roderick J. McDavis made institutional history this past fall by embarking on the first presidential visit to Ghana, Nov. 8-11. He was joined on the trip by faculty members Steve Howard and Paschal Younge, as well as Daniel Weiner, director of the University’s Center for International Studies.
The trip marked McDavis’ first time in Africa and focused on the development of OHIO’s Ghana Study Abroad programs and the establishment of an OHIO-Ghana Alumni Chapter.
“The opportunity we had to engage with the students, faculty and leaders of African University strengthened the ties between our universities,” said McDavis. “Beyond that, spending time with Ohio University students studying in Ghana and establishing an Ohio University alumni chapter in Ghana were especially meaningful aspects of the visit.”
During the trip, McDavis had the opportunity to meet with several key dignitaries, traditional rulers and contemporary politicians, as well as university officials. He also delivered the commencement address at the African University College of Communications.
McDavis met with Ohio University students enrolled in the Teach in Ghana program as well as OHIO alumni living in Ghana. He also visited with representatives from the University of Ghana and the University of Education Winneba.
On his final day in Ghana, McDavis was honored with a special performance by the National Dance Company of Ghana at the National Theatre.
“In our brief visit to Ghana, we had valuable opportunities to share the Ohio University story,” said McDavis. “Throughout our history, Ohio University has been noted for our global outreach and connections. It is an honor to continue that important work on behalf of the Ohio University family.”
