Dear Ohio University Colleagues,
As we approach the end of the quarter and begin to make plans for the holidays, it is an opportunity for us to think about those in our community who are in need. For some of us, that includes neighbors, for others it may mean family and friends.
United Appeal is an organization that fills an important need in our community. With 12 partner agencies, they reach out to those with disabilities and mental illness as well as senior citizens, children and families.
Most recently, we saw the impact of the American Red Cross which assisted friends and neighbors who were affected by the tornado that hit our county this fall. Those families are still working to pull their homes back together after experiencing such devastation. Without the American Red Cross, resources that those families needed in the aftermath, including food, shelter and clothing, would not have been possible.
Because United Appeal and its partner agencies do so much for our community, Ohio University has partnered with United Appeal to raise funds for these organizations through this annual campaign. The committee has set a participation goal of 20 percent of Ohio University faculty and staff supporting the campaign with a pledge or gift. The financial goal is $85,000. The campaign committee is seeking “A Simple Gift” from the members of our University community. This gift could make the difference in the number of canned and boxed goods at the Athens County Food Pantry or building supplies for Habitat for Humanity.
I want to thank the 2010-2011 Ohio University United Appeal Committee for their work, especially Thea Arocho, George Cheripko, Don Flournoy, Colleen Kiphart, Andrew Stuart, Jessica Wingett and Becky Watts. Their leadership and hard work are essential to our ability to achieve a successful campaign.
As a university, we have committed ourselves to lifting up our region. Now, let’s do what we can to help give those in need a brighter tomorrow. I hope that you will consider making “A Simple Gift,” which can make a difference in the lives of those who are touched by United Appeal and its partner agencies.
