The Ohio University community is mourning the loss of Matthew Morris, a second year sociology-criminology major at Ohio University.
At approximately 12:22 a.m. on Nov. 4, Ohio University police responded to a report of a suicide at Gamertsfelder Hall. Upon arrival, officers entered the room and found the student apparently deceased. The Athens County Coroner's office responded and made the official determination of death.
The body was transferred to the Montgomery County Coroner's office in Dayton, where an autopsy will be performed. The Ohio University Police Department is investigating the circumstances of the death.
"We are deeply saddened to learn of Matt's passing. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family and friends," said Vice President for Student Affairs Kent Smith. “Students are encouraged to support each other and use the resources we have available for support during this difficult time.”
Students in need of support can call Counseling and Psychological Services 24 hours a day at 740-593-1616 in order to speak with a counselor.
