The president's welcome message to OHIO students

Dear Students:

It is wonderful to welcome back returning students and to greet the newest members of the Bobcat family. I hope you had a good summer, and have returned refreshed and energized to start a great new academic year.

When visiting our university’s website, many of you may notice our vision statement which reads, “Ohio University will be the nation’s best transformative learning community where students realize their promise, faculty advance knowledge, staff achieve excellence, and alumni become global leaders.”

I bring it to your attention because it describes who we are as a university community and who we want to be. As we each—students, faculty, and staff—transform as individuals, we also are transforming Ohio University.

Our faculty and staff are looking at what we can do that we’ve never done before; asking how we can do things in different ways that make the most of collaboration, technology, and innovation; and considering what things we are doing that no longer have relevance.

So what does that mean for students? It means that as members of our community, we want you to take an important role in helping us transform our university.  We need you to share your ideas by visiting my office during my monthly open office hours, by emailing me at, or by talking with your student leaders.

We –faculty and staff – are here to support you as you pursue your personal and professional goals. We are focused on helping you realize your promise. What we ask in return is that you join us in our efforts to be the best student-centered learning experience in America. It will be the most important thing we can do for you and the students who follow, for our university, and for its service to humanity.

Again, welcome back! I look forward to hearing from you!

Go Bobcats!
