OHIO rolls out welcome mat

330 student volunteers prepare for action-packed move-in weekend

The Ohio University community is braced with open arms for the flurry of suitcases and new faces that characterize its annual move-in weekend. Record numbers of students have volunteered to welcome new arrivals around this year's move-in theme: Go Green!

"It's to help students get to know each other, get connected, meet new people and get that sense of excitement about being a Bobcat," said Associate Director of Residential Housing Beverley Wyatt, who is responsible for the coordination of fall quarter opening.

Sponsored by the Division of Student Affairs, move-in weekend will feature a wide range of services, free events and entertainment designed to connect incoming Bobcats with their new surroundings.

Driving into town

In addition to the traditional directional teepee signs, this year's newcomers will be also be guided by 15-foot banners across campus, fashioned after the Google Maps teardrop. All teardrop banners will also be color-coded to correspond with the provided campus map.

Incoming traffic is encouraged to tune into local radio station WXTQ 105.5, which will broadcast move-in updates to incoming students and their families on Thursday and Friday.

Moving into the halls

A "Go Green Team" has been assembled to assist with move-in. These trained student volunteers will work in shifts throughout the day on Thursday and Friday of opening week, helping to unload cars, carry boxes and otherwise assist first-year students settle into their residence halls.

Wyatt said Student Affairs began recruiting for the "Go Green Team" this past spring through OHIO's more than 350 registered student organizations. She said that so far, approximately 330 students have signed up – more than double the number of student volunteers who assisted with last year's move-in.

The payoff, according to junior biology major Alex Anderson, is simply the good feeling of being of service to someone.

"We're there just to help the students and kind of ease them into college, especially those freshmen students who are just coming in for the first time," said Anderson, who volunteers through student ministry group Reach Out on Campus.

Staff volunteers will also be assisting as “Go Green Guides,” providing directional support, information disbursement and other services as needed during move-in.

Special events and entertainment

In addition to assisting with move-in, many of the student volunteers will assist at special events in the evenings. Planned evening events include a movie on College Green, the annual "Bobcat Bash" at Baker University Center, a beach party on South Green, and Saturday night's OHIO football match-up.

University President Roderick J. McDavis will extend an official welcome on Monday, Sept. 6, during the president's convocation for first-year students at 2:30 p.m. in the Convocation Center. Students clad in complementary OHIO t-shirts will then parade to College Gate with McDavis for the annual Student Involvement Fair on College Green. Later that day, two performances by the Ohio University Marching 110 will cap off the holiday weekend's welcome events.

"(Move-in weekend) is really busy and really upbeat," said Anderson. "There are people everywhere. There are students everywhere. There are parents everywhere. There are lots of things going on, and there is a very upbeat atmosphere. People are excited to be back and exited to get started."

And if Wyatt has her way, move-in weekend won't be the last time that students "Go Green" this year.

"'Go Green' translates to all things OHIO," she said. "From athletics to sustainability, it really does signify Ohio University. And the plan is to build on this theme throughout the year."
