Alumnus donates logo book collection to Southern campus

Collection is said to be among the world’s largest

Ohio University’s Southern campus is now home to what is being called one of the world’s largest collections of logo design and corporate identity books thanks to a generous donation from David Carter.

Carter, a native of Flatwoods, KY graduated from the School of Journalism in 1967 and donated his personal collection of logo and graphic design books to OUS Electronic Media department on Tuesday. 

In 1972, Carter published the world’s first book of logo designs when he was in his 20s. He worked on the book in Athens, producing several proposals and sending them out to different book publishing houses. He was turned down by 17 publishers before deciding to self-publish the book.

“I sold about 4,000 copies just part time,” said Carter. After that, he self-published 8 books before catching the eye of several book publishing powerhouses in New York. Carter then sold his books  to various publishers through the years. The last books written by Carter were published by HarperCollins. Since his first foray into books, Carter has produced 114 books with total sales near the one million mark. 

Carter’s career has extended over several fields, including advertising, journalism, television production and brand consulting, according to his personal website, 

Carter’s achievements and special attention to the campus led OUS to establish the David E. Carter Creativity Center and Museum in October of 2005. The museum includes all of Carter’s published books, along with memorabilia from his childhood, replicas from his past and present locations and from his various careers. 

Although Carter did not attend OUS, there is a reason that the museum is located at OUS, Carter said.

“I got my Master’s at Athens campus, but [OUS] was within 5 miles of where I started and spent the beginning of my career,” Carter said. “I wanted to show students who were or are from that area that they can make it in the media world. I wanted to give inspiration to those who do not have much to begin with.”

There may be larger collections in private firms, but the recent donation of his personal collection of logo and design books is the most comprehensive that is available to the public, Carter said. 

He was thrilled to have the books, which took almost 40 years to collect, placed in the collection at OUS.
“I believe that having a collection of this importance will add visibility to Ohio University's Southern campus. They already have an excellent program in Electronic Media, and this will add to that legacy,” said Carter
