Graduate Ceremony Information

Master's and Doctoral Ceremony | Friday, May 4, 2018, 9:30 AM

Candidates must assemble in the Convocation Center garage area no later than 8:45 AM. Signs will be placed throughout the garage area indicating each college's location. Candidates will form a single line behind the appropriate sign. Candidates will receive a name card in the garage area which they must keep with them until they are called to the platform for recognition. Graduates will return to their seats after their name is called by the reader. Tickets are not necessary for this ceremony.

Participation Eligibility

To be eligible to participate in spring commencement, have your name listed in the commencement program, and purchase a cap and gown, you must have filed a valid graduation application for the spring semester. If you will complete your degree requirements in the summer semester following the spring commencement ceremony, then you may make an application for graduation in spring indicating you will complete your degree in summer.

To be eligible to participate in fall commencement, have your name listed in the commencement program, and purchase a cap and gown, you must have already been awarded your degree the preceding summer semester or have filed a valid graduation application for the fall semester.

Participation Instructions

Signs will be placed throughout the garage area indicating each college location. Candidates will form a single line behind the appropriate sign. Candidates will receive a name card in the garage area which they must keep with them until they are called to the platform for recognition.

The dean of the graduate college will introduce all master's degree candidates for conferral by the president of the University. The dean will then request the candidates for master's degrees by college to proceed to the platform under the direction of the marshals. Candidates will be led in two separate lines to the ramp in front of the stage area. As each candidate proceeds up the ramp, the student will hand their name card to a READER.

Candidates will proceed up the ramp be greeted by the academic dean or designated assistant of their college and immediately proceed down the ramp to their left or right, where upon each candidate will be handed a Commencement folder. Candidates will then return to their seats. A formal recessional will conclude the ceremony after all degrees have been conferred.

Photographs

Photographs will be taken by a professional photographer. A picture will be taken of each candidate being greeted by their academic dean or representative on stage. Within ten days following Commencement, candidates should receive a photographic proof. There is no obligation to purchase these pictures.

The transaction, however, is an agreement between the student and GradImages. Ohio University serves only in the capacity of providing the opportunity for the transaction. PM Undergraduate Ceremony | Saturday, May 5, 2018, 2:00 PM

Candidates must assemble in the Convocation Center garage area no later than 1:15 PM. Signs will be placed throughout the garage area indicating each college's location. Candidates will form a single line behind the appropriate sign. Candidates will receive a name card in the garage area which they must keep with them until they are called to the platform for recognition. Graduates will exit the area after their name is called. Tickets are not necessary for this ceremony.

Participation Instructions

All candidates will line up in the garage located under the Convocation Center. Please report to the appropriate college table to receive a name card. Once candidates have their name cards, they will form a single line behind the appropriate sign.

At the appropriate time, each line will be led into the arena by a marshal. Please move quickly and quietly and sit where directed. Following the processional and the singing of the National Anthem, the ceremony will be convened. Greetings will be extended by a class student leader and a representative from the Alumni Association board of directors. The Commencement speaker will follow, after which everyone will rise for the singing of the Alma Mater.

All recipients of associate's and bachelor's degrees will be introduced for conferral by the provost. Once degrees have been conferred by the president of the University, academic deans will ask for their colleges to rise and proceed to the platform under the direction of the marshal. Candidates will be led in two operate lines to the ramp in front of the stage area. As each candidate proceeds up the ramp, the student will hand their name card to a READER.

Candidates will proceed immediately up the ramp to be greeted by the academic dean or designated assistant of their college and immediately proceed down he ramp to their left or right, where upon each candidate will be handed a Commencement folder as they exit the arena. Graduates will not be returning to their seats. Please be as quiet as possible during this process so that each and every name that is read can be heard by family and friends.

Speaker

Allie LaForce, a 2011 Ohio University graduate and Emmy-nominated reporter and anchor for CBS Sports and Turner Sports, will deliver Ohio University’s 2018 Spring Commencement address next month.

LaForce graduated magna cum laude from OHIO’s nationally recognized Honors Tutorial College with a bachelor’s degree in journalism.

“It’s truly an honor to be given the opportunity to visit OHIO and speak to this year’s graduating class,” said LaForce. “I can’t wait to return to where it all started and share this once-in-a-lifetime experience with family, friends and colleagues.”

LaForce, who has worked as a color analyst, sideline reporter, studio host and more, has quickly evolved into a nationally-known personality for her insightful sports coverage and commentary, most recently during the 2018 NCAA® Division I Men’s Basketball Championship.
