OHIO student leaders prepare for Bobcat Student Orientation

This summer Bobcat Student Orientation will include virtual and in-person events and options for students and their families. 

The orientation experience has been expanded to include three phases. Phase 1 includes pre-orientation modules that will be released to students in May. The live event in June with an option of attending virtually or in-person is the second phase. Programs have been shortened to one day to help ensure the safety of participants with regard to COVID-19 protocols. Finally, Phase 3 will take place in July as a post-orientation module experience.

The Gait Lab, Healthy Village and interdisciplinary virtual reality experiences were just a few of the highlights of Ohio University’s College of Health Sciences and Professions’ (CHSP) first-ever “Experiencing Health Professions: From Science to Practice” event on Thursday, Feb. 27.

The free event welcomed participants to Grover Center to view research presentations, engage in interactive demonstrations, guided and unguided tours and more.

Ohio University study intends to improve rehabilitation techniques of ACL injuries in the military and beyond

While ACL injury rehabilitation programs often focus on the physical recovery of the knee and the muscle groups around it, research from Ohio University’s College of Health Sciences and Professions indicates the brain also plays a major role in successful returns after an ACL injury.

Dustin Grooms, PhD, associate professor in OHIO’s School of Applied Health Sciences and Wellness, and his team recently completed the first phase of a $750,000 research grant from the United States Department of Defense with the goal of improving the orthopedic healthcare for the war fighter and civilian populations.

Phase II of Grooms’ research project is underway; upon completion of the study, Grooms believes rehabilitation techniques will “drastically” change and its results will benefit many population types.

Ohio University's new exercise physiology track will prepare students for numerous career paths

One of Ohio University’s newest academic programs within the College of Health Sciences and Professions (CHSP) has also developed one of more unique exercise physiology curriculums when compared to its national peers.

CHSP’s Human Performance track, part of its Master of Science in Exercise Physiology program within the School of Applied Health Sciences and Wellness, is a new summer-to-summer, 34-hour program that will prepare students for a variety of possible careers, including strength and conditioning for sports and tactical populations, sports analytics, coaching, sport technology, performance equipment sales and more.

The program, which prides itself on bridging the gap between classroom knowledge and meaningful professional application, is especially unique because of its targeted focus on human performance.

Dustin Grooms, an associate professor of athletic training in the Ohio University College of Health Sciences and Professions, is concerned about the high number of athletes who return to the court or field and injure their ACL again.
