In an effort to contribute to the Athens County community outreach effort, the Ohio University Student Nutrition Club sponsored a “Friday Night Life Supper” on behalf of the local nonprofit organization, Good Works. Good Works’ mission is to provide shelter and empowerment for those experiencing homelessness, and to teach positive, loving values. The Nutrition Club students fulfilled that vision when they hosted the dinner on March 31st. The dining event provided social and nutritional support for community members who struggle with food and financial insecurity. The goal for the evening was to plan, provide, and clean up after a meal of roughly 150 people, all while fostering a feeling of hope and social equity with those attending. Their faculty advisor, Deb Murray, noted the students’ eagerness, saying, "This was all their idea. They solicited food donations, set up work shifts at the Atrium Cafe, and delivered pre-prepared foods to the Good Works site independently. It was incredibly gratifying to see how excited they were at the prospect of giving back to their Athens community." The OHIO Nutrition students also promoted healthy eating by passing out handcrafted notecards with fun facts on them. Both the food service and healthy education were well received by those in attendance. Afterward, the students stated that they were very thankful for the uplifting and heartfelt experience.
