Michael Adkins, Chelsea Freeman, and Stephanie Johnson recently completed Landing Zone training with the Brigadier General James M. Abraham and Colonel Arlene F. Greenfield Veterans and Military Student Services Center

This faculty/staff awareness program consisted of five, one-hour sessions, or “zones” that provided important and helpful information to anyone who would like to become an advocate for veteran students. The Landing Zone training is named because it is symbolic of a safe place to members of the military. The zones focused on military culture, the transition from service member to civilian life, veteran funding, PSTD and TBIs and resources across campus for student veterans.

Participants learned that student veterans may have a different college experience than most and it is important to have knowledge of resources that are available to them and/or their dependents.

For the Interdisciplinary Health Studies staff, this training was particularly valuable because of the department's new Veteran’s Health Certificate. The certificate is designed to help health care professionals as they work with, and care for, our nation’s 20 million living veterans. Whether in the health care system or higher education, IHS is committed to providing quality services to veterans whenever possible.

Upon completion of training, participants were awarded Landing Zone badges and certificates to display in their offices.

The new Veterans Health graduate certificate program in the department of IHS is now accepting applications!

For more information on the Veterans Health certificate, please contact Stephanie Johnson.

Mike Adkins, an Army National Guard veteran and an IHS instructor is teaching IHS 5402: Veteran Affairs System: Healthcare Perspectives in Spring Session 2, beginning March 18. Seats are still available in this graduate course, which counts towards the Veterans Health Certificate.
