High School Outreach Program
Graduate Assistants in Ohio University's Athletic Training program have provided care to thousands of athletes over the years at high schools throughout the region. Many of these rural Appalachian schools would not otherwise be able to obtain health-care services for their student athletes.
The Athletic Training students serve as the high school's head athletic trainer and, working under the direction of a physician, are responsible for all facets of athletic health care. The high school setting provides an ideal opportunity for students to develop clinical independence, improve their management skills, and become strong practitioners. Graduate assistants are responsible for covering multiple sports and coordinating with the athletic director, coaches, and community medical service providers. After this experience, students are prepared for any employment opportunity.
Science and Health in Artistic Performance (SHAPe) Program
Performing arts medicine is a blossoming field that brings together the sciences and the arts in innovative ways. Performing artists are prone to an extremely high injury rate because of the rigor of their physical activity in rehearsals and performances. In addition, these "artistic athletes" typically do not receive the specialized healthcare they require. At Ohio University, the Division of Athletic Training in the College of Health Sciences and Professions is collaborating with the College of Fine Arts to address the health and healthcare needs of performers.
The initiative, Science and Health in Artistic Performance, or SHAPe, comprises three facets: clinical care, research and education. The healthcare needs of the university's performing arts students are met by the SHAPe Clinic, located in Putnam Hall. The research component primarily investigates the demands that artistic performance places on the body's musculoskeletal system, and includes a mentoring aspect that trains students in performing arts medicine research. The final piece of the SHAPe initiative, education, targets both healthcare workers, equipping them to better serve the healthcare needs of performing artists, and performers and performing arts instructors, offering them essential information about maintaining a healthy artistic practice.
